How to Make your Child’s Birthday Special

These are different ways to make that day extra special for your little one. Gather around and see the different ways you can make that birthday extraordinary!

Growing up I didn’t really have any traditions that went with my birthday other than a party and presents. My first experience with making a whole day special was when I was living with my ex, his mother made his whole day special. Starting with a sign on his bathroom mirror saying “happy birthday” to a special birthday breakfast. I loved these traditions and wished I would the same with my kids one day.

My oldest daughters birthday is upon us and inspired me to write this post. I hope that you can take some of these and help your child feel special as I have done with my girls. Everyone wants a day to feel like they are uniquely loved. That’s what this post is all about, and of course having fun!

Birthday Pancakes

A great day always starts with a great breakfast. I love the idea of birthday pancakes. My daughter loves this sugary treat for breakfast. This special recipe is from One Little Project. Her recipe features a boxed cake mix! So, super simple.

You could also buy or make your favorite pancake recipe and add sprinkles, or chocolate candies. With a dollop of whipped cream on top. Whatever your little one will enjoy more.

Mommy and Daddy Time

Our lives are so busy. So it can be hard to take some time out and spend it with your little one. Children love to spend time with us so, on their special day play with them. Have them decide what game to play and have them take the lead. Enjoy who they are and where they are now.

Ignore the expectations of what you should or could be doing and just have that inner child play. They will feel more special and more loved with this free sentiment than any toy you can buy.

Cards

Making a special card for your child might make them feel on top of the world. Depending on their age they might enjoy a long note about how much you love them. Or a smaller child might enjoy a card that is part coloring page that they could decorate themselves and make it their own.

Signs

Just like I talked about above a sign on their door or mirror wishing them a happy birthday and telling them how much you love them. This might make them feel the most special.

If your child is younger you can use signs as a treasure hunt to lead them to their gift and card, or to another birthday surprise. Let your creative juices flow and make up an obstacle course that leads to a birthday trip or other surprise. Nothing is too much on this special day.

Confetti!

Awake your child with a confetti throwing! Don’t worry about the mess, but expect them to wake up faster than they have ever before. Making sure that their day is special from start to finish is going to be in their memory much longer than the mess that was left on the floor. If they are younger you can also use balloons in this way.

Party!

Of course, you need to party! As you little one gets older this will become more important to them. When they are turning 1, 2, or 3 years old the party is really just something that gives them a lot of attention but isn’t really meaningful to them. You can check out my youngest daughter’s first birthday here. As they start to get into the pre-school and school years this is more important to them as their friends also get more important to them.

Friends

As you get more into the pre-teen and teenage phases friends become more and more special. By this time they have formed relationships that are important to them and it becomes less important for aunt Mildred to see them on their birthday.

So just having a few of their best friends over can be the best thing to do. Saving you some money along the way. Or you can gather their friends together and take them somewhere special for a thing they want to do together.

Places to go, things to see.

Any age enjoys going to a special place that they want to go to. Younger children might enjoy, children’s museums, zoos, or play lands. As your children get older they will want to do things more independently with their friends. Seeing a movie with friends, or going shopping together can be the most special experience they might want to do.

Or going to a special restaurant that is further away can be the treat that they like on their birthday. Or a further away store, mall, or experience that they might enjoy.

It’s all relative.

All of these things are specific to your child, what they find special and what you know they like. A child that is more introverted might not want a party at all and that would make their day more special to just spend time with your family.

A teenage daughter might enjoy a day at the spa and a nice lunch out rather than a big party with clowns and family. So whatever you want to do to make your child feel special, you know them best.
