Crochet Kids Dinosaur Costume

Happy fall y’all! It’s that time of year again, Halloween is fast approaching and you want to whip something together fast and cheap this crochet kids dinosaur costume is for you. It features crocheted appliques to transform any regular sweatshirt into a super cute costume.

2020 has been a very weird year for us all and there is no exception with Halloween this year. Since the CDC recommends not going trick or treating we are just going to a reverse parade where we drive through some fairgrounds that are decked out in all things Halloween. So our costumes will be worn and enjoyed by pretty much us and you guys who see it online. Any excuse to get dressed up and pretend to be something else, even if no one else is around is good enough for me to go all out.

I love Halloween and fall, it’s my favorite time of year. I start crocheting during this time as well, it’s a good pass time when you are stuck inside and it’s nice and warm to cuddle up to. So after making my Pterodactyl hooded scarf I started crocheting the pieces for my oldest daughter’s crochet dinosaur kids costume.

She wanted to be a brachiosaurus, the long-necked, rounded faced herbivore. I tried to stay true to that, although I took some creative license by adding a sort of crest to the top of the head. So, don’t at me if you are a dinosaur enthusiast I know this isn’t exactly a brachiosaurus. It was just the inspiration for what I created.

If this sounds good to you, then let’s get started!

Using black slip stitch along the curved edges of the mouth. I did 5, then fastened off and weaved in ends.

Mouth Assembly

Using the long tail take a yarn needle and attach your teeth where they look the best. I like to pin them in place so that they don’t move while I am sewing them into place. I tried to curve mine so it looked like the dinosaur was smiling.

Spines

Magic circle 3 SC slp stch to first (3)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each around slp stch to first ch 1 . (6)

Rnd 3: *SC in first, then 2 SC in next* continue around slp stch to first ch 1. (9)

Rnd 4-6: SC in each around slp stch to first ch 1. (9)

Fasten off and then leave long tail for sewing. Lightly stuff.

Attaching to Sweatshirt

I pinned everything down first to make sure I was making lines where I wanted them. I removed the pieces. Then using my Fiskars perforated rotary blade I made holes along the top middle seam of the hood where your crest is going to go. Then perforate along the front edge of the hood and a little bit along the middle seam.

perforated line

Using a yarn needle attach your pieces to the sweatshirt with the perforations you just made and the tails you left on them. Remember to knot at the beginning and end so they stay firmly on the sweatshirt.

Then, in the desired location get your eye appliques. Attach them using either sewing, ironing, or using liquid stitch.

Then you are done! Enjoy your easy crochet dinosaur kids costume. If you make this feel free to tag @mamaofthedrama or if you have any questions leave them below.

Until next time!
