DIY Toddler Dinosaur Costume no-sew

Happy fall y’all! It’s that time of year again goblins, ghouls, and witches are walking among us. Make your little toddler a cute DIY toddler dinosaur costume! Its base is a sweatshirt that can keep them warm on a chilly fall night if you are trick or treating or if you are staying at home and doing fun projects you can still dress up and enjoy the night.

In my previous post, I talk about how we are going to be doing a reverse parade in order to socially distance this Halloween. So we are going to be a car full of DINOSAURS rawr! My oldest is going to be a brachiosaurus, my youngest is going to be wearing this triceratops inspired costume, I am going as a pterodactyl, and my husband is going as a stegosaurus which will be next week.

As I have talked about before I am not good at sewing. I have single-handedly destroyed the home-ec sewing machines in middle school without even knowing what I did. During quarantine, I did learn how to sew pretty well in order to make masks. So I am no longer the anti-sewer I once was. Even though I learned how to sew I am still not very good at it. I am definitely not at the level of knowing how to make my own patterns like I would need to for this. So, this is going to be no-sew!

So this is super simple. The sweatshirt I got at a local thrift store for a couple of dollars. All of it together was around $22 dollars, which I think is a pretty good deal considering it can be used for more than just a costume but could also just be used as a sweatshirt.

Materials

Tools

  • Scissors
  • liquid stitch
  • Printer (if using my pattern)
  • Pins

Time needed: 3 days

DIY Toddler Dinosaur Costume

  1. Cutting out the pieces

Print out the pattern I provided. Cut out 2 of each piece. If your sweatshirt has a zipper cut the belly piece in half.

  2. Glue your pieces

Glue your belly piece in the center of the sweatshirt. Then, glue most of the horns leaving the bottom without glue so that you can stuff them. The headpieces I glued so the center part is where they were open to be stuffed.

  3. Horns

After your pieces have dried overnight, lightly stuff your horn pieces. Fold the one flap over on itself so it gives you some good area to glue onto the sweatshirt. Glue the bottom part and glue it onto the sweatshirt. I used pins to put them where I wanted them to make sure that they dried in the right spot.

  4. Headpiece

Then, after the horns have dried I started working on the headpiece. Firmly stuff so that is sturdy enough to stand up. Glue the centerpieces together they should overlap a little. I used pins to keep those in place as well. Let dry.

  5. Headpiece (cont’d)

Attach the headpiece to the sweatshirt by lining up the hood with the headpiece. I put glue on the headpiece itself and laid the sweatshirt hood on top of it. Allow it to dry.

  6. Eyes

Using your appliques attach with your liquid stitch to the desired place on your hood.

Then you are done! You have completed your DIY toddler dinosaur costume. Your toddler will be styling for Halloween or any other occasion wearing this cute sweatshirt. What are your little’s doing this Halloween? What are they going as? Let me know in the comments below!
