Mommy Crab Scoodie
Have you heard of a scoodie?! It’s a scarf and hoodie combo. This is a crochet Halloween DIY Mommy Crab Scoodie. It’s super easy! If you like DIY costumes check out my other Halloween Costumes!
I love crocheting! It’s the most soothing and mindless thing I do. I have been practicing this art since I was 9 or 10 years old. I have only recently been making my own patterns. It took me quite a long time to know what I wanted to do and know what stitches would allow me to do that. This is the first pattern I have published so if there are any mistakes please let me know!
We are doing an underwater theme this year for Halloween Ariel the mermaid, Daddy Shark, Mommy Crab, and a Baby Clownfish. All of which are homemade except for my youngest (the clownfish).
Materials you will need:
- Red yarn
- Black yarn
- White yarn
Tools you will need:
- Crochet hook H
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Scoodie
The scarf/hoodie part of this pattern is based on the pattern at the Mooglyblog.
Scarf:
Row 1: FDC 161.
Turn at the end of each row.
Row 2 – 7: Ch 2, dc in each stitch to end of row. Break yarn and finish off.
Hood:
Find center stitch of scarf and place marker (pm). Counting out from marked stitch, pm on either side at 17(19) sts.
Row 1: Join Main Color (held doubled) with a slip stitch to an outer marked st. (Remove this marker.) Ch 2, dc in each st across, moving center marker up to new center st, ending with a dc in the last marked st. (Remove this marker.) Turn. (35(39) dc)
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in each st to one st before marker, 2 dc in next st, dc in center (pm), 2 dc in next st. Dc in remaining sts to end of hood. Turn. (37(41) dc)
Rows 3 – 8(10): Repeat Row 2. Turn. (49(57) dc in last row)
Row 9(11): Ch 2, dc in each st to two before marker, dc2tog, dc in center (pm), dc2tog, dc in remaining sts. Turn. (47(55) dc)
Rows 10(12) – 15(17): Repeat previous Row instructions. (35(43) dc in last row) Fold hood in half and sl st closed through both sides, leaving very last (center) st unworked. Weave in ends.
I then made a long strip of 5 dbc the length of the hood and attached it to the front to make it a little more decorative.
Little claw:
Magic ring ch 2, dbc 4, ch 2, slp stch to first ch2. continue in rounds (7)
Rnd 2: dbc 2 in first dbc, dbc in each around (8)
Rnd 3: 2 dbc in first stitch dbc around (9)
Round 4: 2 dbc in each around (18)
Rnd 5: 2 in first stitch dbc around (19)
Rnd 6: dbc crochet in each around (19)
Slp stitch in first stitch and fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the little and big claw together.
Big Claw:
Magic ring ch 2 dbc 6 ch 2 continue in rounds (9)
Rnd 2: dbc 2 in first stitch, dbc in each around. (10)
Rnd 3: dbc 2 in first stitch, dbc in each around. (11)
Rnd 4: dbc 2 in each stitch around (22)
Rnd 5: dbc 2 in first stitch, dbc in each around. (23)
Rnd 6: 2 dbc in first stitch 1 dbc in next continue around. (33)
Rnd 7-8: dbc in each around. (33)
Rnd 9: dbc in each of the first 23 stitches, ch 10, skip next 10 stitches, slp stitch in the 33 stitch and ch 2.
Rnd 10-15: dbc in each around. (33)
Attach the little claw to the big claw by lining them up and sewing them together with the long tail of the little claw.
For right or left hands just sew them onto your scarf portion with the little claw closer to the left and closer to the right.
Eye Stalks
Rnd 1: magic ring 3 SC
Rnd 2: 2 SC in each around (6)
Rnd3: 2 SC in first stitch and 1 SC in next repeat around slp stch to first and fasten off and weave in ends (9)
Rnd 4: change color to blue SC in each around (9) slp stch to first and fasten off and weave in ends
Rnd 5: change color to white SC around (9)
Rnd 6: 2 SC in first stitch and 1 SC in next (16) slp stch to first and fasten off and leave tail for sewing
Attach all pieces to there correct places on the scoodie.
That’s it! You have finished your crab scoodie. To complete your Halloween costume pair it with a red dress and boots. Or if you want to go the more comfortable route a red tunic and leggings. Bonus points if you want to paint your face red.
