Playing Games That Help Children Learn

Being a parent is a tough job, especially now that staying home has become the main thing in our lives. You’re now homeschooling your child, at least to some degree, whether you like it or not. So, playing games that help children learn is a top priority for your household, because allowing children to continue on in their studies is very important.

However, once they have done their school work, what do you do then? Since many of us can’t go out or maybe don’t want to go outside with our children, you have to make life fun at home. This requires some imagination to try new games with your children.

Musical chairs

Yes, really! This is a game that teaches your children how to deal with frustration. More than likely, you will have children that can deal with being out of the game, and some that can’t. When they miss the opportune time to grab a chair and sit down when the music stops, they will be beaten to the punch. They will then need to stand outside of the game, watch from the sidelines, and learn how to deal with not being included in something. This is a life skill that must be taught early on in life.

It will help them to understand the act of lining up and waiting for their turn at the bank. It will also teach them that the world doesn’t stop for them, they must learn to adapt to every situation and be ready to simply put their own interests on hold for a while. It’s part of being an important member of society.

Hide and seek

Hide and seek is an active problem-solving game. It’s not just about the anticipation of being found or being able to outsmart the searcher. Actually, it’s about being against the clock and having to make the right decisions. They will need to make a short-term decision that will impact their long-term success. This means actions have consequences, no matter how fraught for the time they are. They must choose the best vantage points, the best spaces where they won’t be found and gain experience from the other children that have been found. It’s also a lesson in avoiding repetition or taking the easy way out. Don’t keep doing the same thing over and over, learn to be innovative, and don’t be lazy when making your choices.

The word game

Scrabble is a perfect example of games that can be fun, educational, and very entertaining. But, you may have children that don’t know longer, sophisticated words. So using a scrabble cheat website to help you make words is a great way to learn how to make longer and more relevant words match. Just use scrabble cheat as often as you want, but remember to bank these words into their memory. So eventually they will not have to rely on it.

Games that teach life skills and how to expand their vocabulary are going to be irreplaceable by the time they are in their teens. So, as parents, use this time in lockdown to teach these lessons.

Bingo

Another one of the games that help children learn is bingo. I loved playing it as a child when I was in school. This is for kindergarten so there might need to be some help involved if your child doesn’t know all of their sight words. It’s been proven to improve comprehension of the words as well. So get those chips out and start playing! I mean… Learning!

Chess

It has been proven for some time now that chess is incredibly helpful to children’s learning. The ability to play requires logic, mental prowess, rationality, and patience. Academically children that play chess perform better than their counterparts that don’t. So break out that chessboard and start to learn and play chess. Admittedly this is for older school-aged children but even young children can start to learn the concepts of the game.

These are just a few ideas of games that can help your children learn. What are you doing to break up the monotony of schooling from home? Are you using games? If you are, what games are you using? Or is there another way you are breaking up homeschool? Let me know in the comments below!
