Visual Homeschool Schedule

This is a visual homeschool schedule to help you show your young or special needs child what they are going to do for the day. No reading required! Give them and yourself predictability in what the day is going to bring.

I have realized recently that my visual daily schedule is getting a lot of attention. I am assuming this is because we are all under forced homeschooling at the moment. Visual schedules cater to little ones or special needs kids who don’t know how to read yet. They are particularly helpful to those with speech delays or speech impediments which hinder expressive communication. I talk about that more in my original post about a daily visual schedule.

A little about visual homeschool schedules.

We use both for school and at home for the same reasons. It allows my child with an expressive and receptive language delay to be able to understand her schedule. Give her predictability and allows her to transition between activities without surprises. If you know anything about autism these are all really important to them. They prevent meltdowns and also give you a schedule to stick to. It also will give you the same comfort that they feel.

These forms of schedule and communication were recommended to me. By a speech and language pathologist and it has been really helpful. My daughter’s expressive and receptive speech has grown leaps and bounds. Since her diagnosis of a global developmental delay even in times of stress, she can communicate. So the communication piece of using pictures really isn’t needed in our household anymore. However, we still use them since it takes a lot less for her to be able to process a picture.

For the reasons I have mentioned about I am going to be doing a special needs version of the homeschool visual schedule and a kindergarten or pre-k version of the visual schedule since they are slightly different. The special needs schedule is focused more on life skills and services that they need on a daily basis. They both are focused on taking numerous breaks and have a suggested time of 5-20 minutes for each task on the schedule.

On our days that we are doing distance education, it takes us only an hour to get all of the “independent” work done. The rest of the time we are meeting on Teams and Facetime with her TSS, emotional support/learning support, OT, reading support, or speech teachers. I have completely cut out the specials though in order to keep me and her sane. Of course on some days I completely give up the whole thing and tell her well try again tomorrow. Ain’t nobody got time for being bit and pinched for distance education.

I debated over whether I should be making a general template for you to personalize to your school schedule. Since a lot of places are doing distance education. As we are doing distance education. So, that presents its own unique challenges that are slightly different from homeschooling where you are left to really fend for yourself. I ultimately opted to make one that is generic and not customizable. If you are wanting that please let me know in the comments below and I will accommodate you.

Even if you don’t want a customizable homeschool visual schedule to let me know how you are doing in the comments below. Are you doing distance education or figuring it out on your own? If you are doing either how are you dealing especially if you have a special needs child I would love to be able to get some tips and tricks if you have any.

In times like these, we need to come together as mama’s and build each other up, help each other out, and lend a socially distanced ear. I hope you all are doing well, and are staying safe.
