DIY Mermaid Costume

My daughter is in love with all things mermaid. Her original love started with Ariel The Little Mermaid. Which we had an argument over because Ariel was not a little baby, therefore, she could not be the “little mermaid.” So we just had to call it Ariel for a year 😂.

Her fourth birthday was Little Mermaid themed. My mom did an awesome job with food and decor because Aria was just 2 months old at the time. I was unable to do my whole Pinterest Mom thing because at that time was when we found out about Aria’s weight problems and such.

Ever since then she has loved mermaids. So this year when I asked her what she wanted to be she said she wanted to be Ariel. If you have not been reading my blog for very long you will know that I am crafty mainly out of frugality. Shamelessly I am cheap and I am not about to pay over 40 dollars for a Disney® certified Ariel costume. I can make one that looks similar for around 14 dollars.

I bought mermaid leggings, a white long sleeve shirt, and a sheet of purple felt for less than that cost.

This is a super simple costume, requiring few tools and materials. Anyone can do it. If you want to make it even easier, you can just use your Cricut!

Materials you will need:

  • Mermaid leggings
  • White long-sleeve shirt
  • Purple Felt

Tools you will need:

  • Glue gun and glue
  • Scissors or Cricut

Cricut Instructions:

  1. Find my design here on Cricut™️ Design Space.
  2. Using a deep cut housing blade and a strong grip mat cut the felt, check out my tutorial here
  3.  Using a hot glue gun, glue along the edges of the felt and adhere them to the breast area of the shirt.

Seashell Bra

Printer Instructions:

  1. Print out the Seashell Bra PDF pattern.
  2. Cut out the pattern and lay it on top of your felt. Pin it in place.
  3. Using the printable as your guide cut out your felt.
  4.  Now pin your bra where you like it.
  5.  Using a hot glue gun, glue along the edges of the felt and adhere them to the shirt. Pulling the pins out as you glue.

That’s it! All you have to do is add your mermaid leggings, and wig. And…

It’s an Ariel inspired mermaid costume!

I wanted to make my Ariel wig so I found a yarn pattern on themagicyarnproject.com.
